Rachel’s Story

A 32-year old woman with several young children was in the late stages of her pregnancy when she developed tiredness, breathlessness and a mild cough. Given that most pregnant women feel this way in the last trimester of their pregnancies, she thought little of it. Following the delivery of her child, these symptoms worsened and Rachel* found it almost impossible to carry her little girl, feed her or walk to the bathroom.
After discussions and examinations with a medical specialist Rachel was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy. Cardiomyopathy is a serious heart condition which can be caused by pregnancy and childbirth and causes dilation (enlargement) of one or more of the chambers of the heart. This makes it more difficult for blood to flow through the structures and this in turn causes further enlargement of the chambers. Cardiomyopathy is controlled by a large number of medications and leads to huge restrictions of a client’s daily lifestyle, and can lead to death.

Rachel only had her policy with ING Life for six months, and while her cardiomyopathy was thankfully in the early stages and did not meet the criteria for a full trauma payment we were pleased to pay her a diagnosis benefit of $50,000. If Rachel’s condition should worsen in the future the remaining 75% of her trauma benefit will be paid to her.
